If you've never tried oven roasted grapes on the vine before, they are a delicious way to turn a sour grapes into sweet and juicy flavor explosions.
We've all gotten a bag of bag sour grapes before and they are incredibly dissapointing.
Roasting grapes in the oven takes one extra step, but adds an incredible depth of flavor and sweetness.

What do roasted grapes taste like?
Roasting grapes intensifies their inherent sweetness. As they cook, the sugars in the grapes caramelize, creating it's own rich, syrupy sweetness.
The intensity of the sweetness if similar to balsamic glaze.
This flavor comes from the natural sugars in the grapes reacting to the heat, resulting in a slightly deeper and more complex taste.
How to choose sweet grapes?
It's not just luck, there is some technique involved in picking the sweetest grapes.
Grape variety
Thompson Seedless, Red Globe, Flame Seedless, and Concord are often the sweeter grape varieties.
Seasonality
The best time to eat any fruit including grapes is when they're in season.
This can vary depending on the type of grape and regional differences in climate.
Grape Variety | Harvesting Season |
---|---|
Thompson Seedless, Red Globe, Flame Seedless, and Concord | Late summer to early fall (August to October) |
Wine Grapes | Late summer to fall (varies by wine type and region) |
Concord Grapes | Early fall (September) |
Muscat Grapes | Late fall (sometimes extending into October) |
Champagne & Black Corinth Grapes | Late summer to early fall |
Color
Red and Black Grapes:
For red and black grapes, shades of red or purple are indicative of the sugars developing within the grapes.
Avoid grapes with patches of green, as these areas might still be under-ripe and less sweet.

Green Grapes:
Green grapes, such as Thompson Seedless or Perlette, should exhibit a light, yellowish-green hue when they are ripe.
The green color becomes slightly translucent or slightly golden which is another sign of grapes ripening.
Which grapes are best for roasting?
While most grape varieties can be roasted, some are better suited for this process due to their size, sweetness, and how they react to heat.
I would recommend choosing grape varieties that are seedless and are slightly larger. These tend to work well for roasting.
What can I put roasted grapes on?
So many things! Here are some of my favorite ways to eat roasted grapes.
Can I roast grapes in the air fryer?
Yes! Air fry the grapes for about 8-12 minutes on 375F, shaking the basket every few minutes for even roasting.
