If you've ever seen the overnight oats brand Mush in the refrigerated section and wondered about the taste, nutrition, and whether it is worth trying, I'm a registered dietitian who is here to share my thoughts.

As a dietitian, I'm always on the lookout for high-quality, nutrient-dense products that can simplify my mornings.

Mush overnight oats are made with a blend of rolled oats, milk, and various fruits and nuts, depending on the flavor. The oats come pre-made in individual servings, so all you have to do is grab a container from the fridge. This makes them an excellent choice for busy mornings when you don't have time to prepare a full breakfast.

In this blog post, I'll share a review on the flavors, ingredients, nutrition, and overall impressions of the Mush overnight oats brand to help you decide if it's worth the purchase.

Mush Overnight Oats Nutrition

Mush Overnight Oats can be a nutritious and convenient breakfast choice.

Most of the Mush flavors are made with wholesome ingredients like oats, plant-based milk, dates, and other dried fruits. This combination provides complex carbs, fiber, and natural sweetness without a lot of added sugar for a good start to the morning.

Pros of Mush Overnight Oats

Convenience: As a grab and go breakfast that does not require any reheating, this is perfect for busy mornings.

Nutritional Value: I like that all of the flavors have a good balance of fiber, protein and healthy fats, which all help you to stay fuller for longer.

Variety: I find the flavor options to be impressive and cater to different taste preferences and dietary needs (nut-free options available).

Cons of Mush Overnight Oats

Limited Customization: Compared to making your own overnight oats, Mush offers less control over ingredients and sweetness levels.

Cost: Mush overnight oats are more expensive than making your own from scratch.

Mush Overnight Oats Ingredients

Mush overnight oats focus on using whole and minimally processed ingredients to create a nutritious and convenient breakfast option.

Here are all of the ingredients in the Mush Overnight Oats flavors.

  • Whole grain rolled oats - the base that provides complex carbs and fiber.
  • Plant-based milks like almond, coconut, or oat milk - to create a creamy, pudding-like texture when soaked overnight with oats.
  • Dried fruits like apples, blueberries, and dates - to add natural sweetness and texture.
  • Fruit juice concentrate - used as a sweetener.
  • Flavorings like cinnamon, cocoa, peanut butter, or coffee.

Sweetener Used In Mush Overnight Oats

Mush primarily utilizes dried fruits (primarily dates) and fruit juice concentrate to add sweetness. I found that their flavors are generally not too sweet and great for a nutrient-dense breakfast option.

In addition to dried fruits, Mush also incorporates fruit juice concentrate as a sweetener. Fruit juice concentrate is made by removing water from freshly squeezed fruit juice, resulting in a more concentrated, less voluminous product. The concentrated fruit sugars in the juice concentrate then help to naturally sweeten the overnight oats.

Does the FDA Consider Fruit Juice Concentrate As Added Sugar?

The FDA considers sugars added during processing, including the sugars in concentrated fruit juices, are considered to be "added sugars."

While Mush uses these concentrates for sweetness in some of its flavors, Mush also uses blended dates, a whole fruit with natural sugars in their products. The FDA doesn't classify the natural sugars in whole fruits (like dates) as "added sugars."

While fruit juice concentrate contains natural sugars from the fruit itself, the concentrating process removes the fiber and water content, leaving behind a more concentrated source of sugar. This is why it's classified as an added sugar by the FDA.

Mush Overnight Oats Flavors

Apple Cinnamon

This flavor totally reminds me of cozy fall mornings. It is sweetened just right with dried apples and apple juice concentrate which is balanced with the warm cinnamon spice.

I love how the cinnamon adds a warming touch that makes it feel like a comforting treat. This flavor was one of my favorites and reminded me of the apple cinnamon overnight oats recipe that I make at home.

Blueberry

The blueberry flavor contains dried blueberries, which are sweetened with a touch of apple juice concentrate.

While this flavor contains real blueberries, the overall blueberry presence was a touch subtler than I expected. I tasted more of the coconut milk base, which unfortunately masked the blueberry taste a bit more than I would have liked.

If you love blueberry, you'll love my recipe for blueberry protein overnight oats, which uses real blended blueberries in the soaking liquid.

Coffee

The coffee flavor comes through nicely in this flavor without being overpowering. I loved the natural sweetness from the dates as well - it provided just the right amount of sweetness without feeling too sugary for breakfast.

Check out my recipe for coffee overnight oats if you want an easy recipe to recreate this flavor at home.

Dark Chocolate

This flavor is on the simpler side as it’s primarily flavored with cocoa powder and sweetened with dates.

It might not be the most exciting flavor on its own, but it's perfect for adding your own toppings. I would suggest adding some berries or sliced banana, slivered almonds, and a sprinkle of chia seeds to add additional flavor and texture.

Maple Cinnamon

For those that like comforting fall flavors, the Maple Cinnamon is a great choice for you.

Along with dates, the Maple Cinnamon Mush flavor is also sweetened with maple sugar, which makes this one of the sweeter choices that contains 6g of added sugar.  As a cinnamon lover, I would have liked a touch more warmth from the spice to balance out the sweetness.

PB&J

This flavor is a fun twist on a childhood classic.

The sweetness of the PB&J Mush flavor comes from a few sources - dried strawberries, dates, apple juice concentrate and strawberry puree concentrate. As a fan of texture, I think the addition of chopped peanuts would have made this even more enjoyable.

Peanut Butter

As a peanut butter lover, I knew that this flavor would be one of my favorites. The sweetness of the Peanut Butter Mush flavor comes naturally from dates. I topped mine with sliced bananas, which gave this breakfast a “chunky monkey” feel.

Peanut Butter Chocolate

The Peanut Butter Chocolate Mush feels like the ultimate dessert for breakfast. Unlike some of the other options, this flavor included real chocolate chips which provided a nice textural contrast against the creamy overnight oats base.

The sweetness of the Peanut Butter Mush flavor is primarily from dates along with a little added coconut sugar in the dark chocolate chips.

Strawberry

At 7g of sugar,  the sweetness for the strawberry mush flavor comes from apple juice concentrate, strawberry puree concentrate, and strawberry juice concentrate. I love the simple strawberry flavor that goes perfectly with the creaminess of the coconut milk.

Vanilla Bean

Sweetened with a date, this vanilla bean flavor contains no added sugars. It is seasoned simply with vanilla extract, which is a versatile canvas for adding your own toppings for additional protein with your oatmeal.

Summary

As a registered dietitian, I find Mush to be a convenient and generally healthy breakfast option with a variety of fun flavors.

However, it's important to be mindful that some flavors may contain added sugars in the form of fruit juice concentrates, even though the label might say "0g added sugars." If you're watching your added sugar intake, I recommend choosing Mush flavors sweetened primarily with dates.

While Mush provides a convenient grab-and-go option, if you're looking for a budget-friendly and personalized breakfast solution, it is very easy to make your own overnight oats at home with these recipes.
